Mike Land Leads Malone University Service Learning Trip

2011 Jun 20

Mike Land of Canton, Ohio, multimedia coordinator at Malone University is traveling to South Africa as part of the university's service learning program this summer.

This summer's full schedule includes trips to Ukraine, Egypt, Honduras, Jamaica, China, South Africa, and Israel. Interested persons can follow along at blog.malone.edu. In addition, the University conducted a trip to Poland over its spring recess. The University partners with international hosts who have compassion, experience, and knowledge with the people of the countries they visit. Trips are always created around the participant's potential to learn about the culture and from the nationals. The service projects are designed by nationals of the host country to address a real need.

This year, 93 Malone University faculty, staff, students, and – in some cases – alumni have participated or are participating in such trips.

Celia King, director of Service Learning, says, "The Service Learning program is designed to fit into the bigger picture of a student's time at Malone. We recognize that an education includes many experiences while a student is in college, and hope that these trips add a layer to understand how what they're learning in the classroom relates to what's happening in other parts of the world."

Malone University, a Christian university for the arts, sciences, and professions in the liberal arts tradition, affiliated with the Evangelical Friends Church, awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 100 academic programs. Malone is recognized by the prestigious Templeton Foundation as a leader in character development and is ranked among the top colleges and universities in the Midwest under the category Universities – Master's according to U.S.News & World Report's America's Best Colleges 2010.
