2012 Jul 17

Malone University students and faculty are spending summer abroad in service to others through a variety of service learning trips. This summer's schedule includes trips arranged through the Office of Spiritual Formation to France and Germany, led by Jack Harris, Ph.D., director of global and off-campus programs / professor of business administration; Costa Rica, led by Ann Lawson, instructor of communication arts; Guatemala, led by residence hall directors Tony Schnyders and Josh Perkins; and Italy, led by Ann Lawson, instructor of communication arts; and trips arranged through the Office of Global and Off Campus Programs to Hong Kong/China, led by Jacci Welling, Ph.D., professor of history and David Entwistle, Psy.D., professor of psychology; and Israel, led by Nate Phinney, Ph.D., dean of the college of theology, arts, and sciences / associate professor of biblical studies. In addition, a trip to Ecuador took place over spring break led by Nancy Varian, Ph.D., director of the Center for Professional Development, and Beth Cark Thomas, Ph.D., professor of elementary education – both from the School of Education and Human Development.

This year, roughly 80 Malone University faculty, staff, students, and – in some cases – alumni have participated or are participating in such trips.

Anthony Davis, a Senior Sports Management major from Hudson, Ohio ( 44236) participated in the trip to Italy.

The University partners with international hosts who have compassion, experience, and knowledge with the people of the countries they visit. Trips are always created around the participant's potential to learn about the culture and from the nationals. The service projects are designed by nationals of the host country to address a real need.

Celia King, director of Service Learning, says, "The Service Learning program is designed to fit into the bigger picture of a student's time at Malone. We recognize that an education includes many experiences while a student is in college, and hope that these trips add a layer to understand how what they're learning in the classroom relates to what's happening in other parts of the world."

Malone University, a Christian university for the arts, sciences, and professions in the liberal arts tradition, affiliated with the Evangelical Friends Church, awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 100 academic programs.
